New here

Howdy, everyone!

I'm new to HFMA as of March 31, 2025. I am a board-certified Healthcare Executive (FACHE) and currently working as the COO of a medical group practice with an ASC. My pathway to healthcare leadership, and especially anything finance, is relatively strange compared to most. I am a retired firefighter/paramedic who also was the President and COO of a private EMS (ambulance) service on my days off. Through that role, I discovered my passion for healthcare administration. While I was still actively employed at the department, I went back to school to finish my undergrad. I then enrolled in grad school at the University of Texas at Dallas, where I completed one year of a Master of Science degree before I also jumped into their MBA program. I finished both degrees and along the way found a sub-section of my passion through healthcare finance. Now I have responsibilities over all finance and operations at my organization, including RCM, AR/AP, capex, etc. I am also an adjunct professor of Healthcare Finance at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Many of my friends and connections are members here as well. Because of their support and lean-in, and because I am a curious person, I wanted to join to learn more about all things Healthcare Finance. I am excited to watch and learn from you all and hopefully make some new wrinkles in the brain with these topics.

Looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.

Regards,

Bert
