As healthcare finance professionals, we’re constantly navigating an industry that is complex, rapidly changing, and increasingly demanding of its leaders. For me, HFMA certification has been about much more than adding letters behind my name.
- Knowledge and confidence. It has strengthened my knowledge and helped me build a broader understanding of healthcare finance beyond the areas I work in every day. That foundation has also increased my confidence— particularly when working through complex financial and operational issues and communicating with executives, physicians, board members, and other stakeholders.
- Credibility and professional growth. As I’ve progressed in my career, certification has also added credibility. It demonstrates a commitment to our profession, continued learning, and maintaining a strong understanding of the healthcare environment we serve.
- A commitment to lifelong learning. Perhaps most importantly, HFMA certification reinforces something I believe strongly about leadership: we should never stop learning. Healthcare continues to evolve, and the knowledge required of healthcare finance leaders has to evolve with it which can include formal or informal trainings. I personally received my master's in healthcare administration after almost 20 years of 'working', yet I still learned so much and it added credibility for me. I also read daily and attend conferences frequently to broaden my knowledge, as well as just finding someone with more knowledge than me in a specific area and grabbing them for a cup of coffee and a conversation.
I’d love to hear from others in this group:
- How has your HFMA certification helped you?
- Has it strengthened your knowledge or confidence?
- Has it opened doors for career advancement or leadership opportunities?
- Has it added credibility in your organization?
- For those considering certification—what questions do you have for those of us who have gone through the process
