What is the value of an HFMA certification? Share your story!

Certifications attest that an individual has demonstrated knowledge and skills in a professional area and is current with the profession’s accepted standards of professional practice. Executives in today’s business environment seek individuals with proven talent. HFMA Certifications provide the evidence of required knowledge and skills.

  • Several years ago I had an interview with HCA for an accounting role.  At the time I had my bachelor's degree in accounting and finance with roughly 10 years experience in healthcare accounting (from payment posting to GL reconciliations).  The interviewer said that if I had certifications in healthcare it would benefit me.  Needless to say I did not get the position.  I had it in the back of my mind that one day I was going to achieve certifications but being a single dad with custody made it difficult to take the extra time.  I decided in Aug 2019 to begin that journey.  I had heard of HFMA before and it may have been from the HCA interviewer but nonetheless, I started studying for the CHFP.  This is not always the case for most folks but I studied from Sept 2019 to March 2020.  I set aside roughly 3-5 hours a week to study.  I passed the first part of the exam which built my confidence, then passed the second part of the exam.  Just as Kimberly Carter says in her response, it just felt good!  I didn't want to stop there.  I had it in my mind that I was going to study for and pass all certifications that HFMA has to offer (with exception of the international).  I passed the CSAF next.  I had lost my job due to COVID which had a ripple affect so I had to pause my certifications for a few months.  As I became ready I had a new energy and drive to complete my goal.  To spare unnecessary details, as of Wednesday April 26, 2023 I passed the Certified Specialist Physician Practice Management (CSPPM).  I now hold all of the "domestic" certifications offered.  Now, one might ask, why do the CSAF, CSBI, CRCR...etc when the CHFP covers all those.  True, it does, but I was determined to pass them all and hope to hold them all going forward.  The CSAF, CSBI and others go into more detail than the CHFP.  I will end up having to recertify for three in the same month but I'll manage LOL!

Thank you HFMA for your platform, your learning material (live and recorded web seminars, courses....etc), and attracting wonderful individuals and leaders such as Katie Tarr in the TN Chapter.  Overall the value of an HFMA certification is pride and accomplishment.

  • Congratulations on your accomplishments!
