Why you should replace adjusted discharges (E02)

Friday June 26, 2020: Why you should replace adjusted discharges (E02)

The use of adjusted discharges as a metric of output to assess facility wide productivity and efficiency is flawed and leads to invalid conclusions. It does not account for the increasing volume and complexity of outpatient procedures. During this session, Providence St. Joseph Health System will share how it effectively uses equivalent discharges and demonstrate why this metric is better suited to health systems.

  • i am looking forward to this.  So much of my explanation of of changes in ratios based on adjusted discharges or adjusted patient days was explaining the change in services (and some with higher charge levels) in the organization vs. what the other part of the ratio is.  Panic over FTEs etc. could be caused by not understanding that FTEs really went with the revenue, but not necessarily with Inpatient services. Outpatient services are such a large part of services now, and contain a lot of variance (colonoscopy vs. chemotherapy).  Also, some services are more labor intensive, some are more supply intensive, etc.
